HONOR CODE
Every high school student participating in Protecting You/Protecting Me shall be honor bound from drinking, smoking, using other illegal drugs or engaging in any illegal activity. Every high school student in PY/PM shall be honor bound to abide by all school policies. Every high school student teaching PY/PM shall be honor bound to report immediately to the adult in charge of the course all apparent violations of the Honor Code that come under his/her observation; failure to do so shall be a violation of the Honor Code.
The purpose of Protecting You/Protecting Me is to prevent injury and death of children and youth due to underage consumption of alcoholic beverages, and vehicle-related risks, especially as passengers in vehicles in which the driver is not alcohol free.
High school students who teach these underage drinking prevention lessons and other prevention messages to younger students are role models and leaders. The unlawful use of alcohol, tobacco and other illegal drugs and violations of school policies are inconsistent with the behavior expected of participants in such a program.
The primary purpose of a student leadership/mentoring course is to assist students in developing concern for others, self-discipline, and to build a foundation for lives of leadership and service. The Honor Code that governs social and academic life of student leaders in prevention demands commitment to the highest personal and community values. The aim of this code is to encourage individuals to develop responsible judgment capable of directing their personal conduct thus developing maturity of character.
From time to time there are violations of the Honor Code. Everyone can be tempted; social pressures or personal problems can compromise our values and thoughtless acts can cost us our integrity. However, infractions are taken seriously. Students in violation will be removed from participating in PY/PM and subject to disciplinary action per the school’s guidelines for such infractions up to and including probation, suspension, and expulsion from the leadership/ mentoring program.
The PY/PM program places high value on the Honor Code, for it ensures integrity on the school campus and in the community and provides assurance that program participants maintain a high standard of student leadership and role modeling. (over)
Living a substance free lifestyle and abiding by all school policies are decisions that we make and must continue to make despite temptation. The Honor Code is a declaration that the honorable course is the most just, and therefore the best.
I, ___________________________________ pledge to respect the Honor Code and to use all of the guidelines at all times. I also pledge to report any violation of the Honor Code that I may observe. I accept the Honor Code as the basis of my participation in the PY/PM program and will do all that I can to uphold the strong values that the PY/PM program promotes throughout the school and community.
