Paul Brueske - Head Boys Coach, Throws

Since arriving at St. Paul's Episcopal School the boys' team has won back to back state Outdoor state championships (2006 & 2007) and the 2007 Indoor state championships. In his first season as head coach the team improved from a 2005 14th place finish (15 points) to winning the 2006 5A State Outdoor Championships (101.50 points). Moreover, the Boys program has produced 15 AHSAA individual  state championship performances under his guidance.

 

Prior to his arrival at St. Paul's, Coach Brueske worked with the UMS-Wright Preparatory track & field program. UMS-Wright won three consecutive state championships in both the girls and boys divisions during his time there. At UMS-Wright, he worked primarily with the field events and has worked with 15 individual 4A state champions in the throws, high jump and pole vault. He assisted UMS-Wright athletes establish new school records in the pole vault, javelin and shot put.  Brueske was also an assistant with the UMS-Wright varsity football team that compiled a 38-4 winning record and won the 2002 4A state championship.

 

Prior to his arrival at UMS-Wright, Brueske spent two seasons as the field events coach at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI. At Ferris State, he produced 14 NCAA qualifiers, including five All-American performances in the throwing events. He also helped design strength training programs for the Ferris State golf, hockey and volleyball programs.

 

Brueske began coaching at McGill-Toolen Catholic High School where he spent three seasons. As the Assistant Head Coach, Brueske helped build McGill-Toolen into a 6A County and Sectional Champion.

 

A graduate of the University of South Alabama where he was a member of the track team, Brueske holds USA Track & Field Level II certification in the throwing, jumping and combined events. Brueske is a certified specialist in Sports Conditioning by the International Sports Science Association, a USA (Olympic) weightlifting certified club coach, and a USA Track & Field Level I  Instructor. On a part time basis, he has worked for the past five years as strength coach for the nationally ranked  tennis program at the University of South Alabama.

Jim Tate - Head Girls Coach, Distance

Coach Jim Tate came to St. Paul’s in 1978 to direct the school’s track and cross-country programs following 9 years of coaching and athletic administration in Episcopal schools in South Carolina and Georgia.  Raised in Mobile, he is a graduate of UMS and The Citadel, and obtained his Masters Degree from the University of Alabama.  Since 1983, his boys and girls teams have claimed an 78 separate state team championships in track and cross-country, and have had a combined 39 team runner-up finishes in state meet competition. The girl’s cross-country team holds the national record for the longest consecutive state championship streak in the nation at 16 (1983-1998).  Twenty nine of his former track and field athletes have competed in either track or cross-country at the collegiate level, twenty of those at Division 1 institutions.  Coach Tate also oversees the Girls Indoor Track and Track and Field programs at St. Paul’s.  He holds Level II certification in endurance training and was selected as the National Federation’s High School Cross-Country Coach of the Year in 1999.  Coach Tate spent 5 years in the US Army as a paratrooper and field artillery officer with a year’s service in Vietnam prior to his career in education.  He is married and the father of two grown sons, Lee and Luther.

 Aaron Moore - Sprints / Horizontal Jumps

Entering his fourth season with St. Paul’s track program, Aaron Moore will continue to coach the sprints and horizontal jumps for the boy’s and girl's team. Coach Moore has produced 5A state qualifiers athletes in every sprint, hurdle and horizontal jumping event, including state champions in the long and triple jump.

 

In addition to his coaching responsibilities with St. Paul’s, Moore has also coached with the Port City Track Club for the past seven years. Moore has produced over ten state champions for the Port City Track Club and numerous USATF Junior National qualifiers.

 

A 1996 graduate of Davidson High School, Moore was highly successful hurdler. His accomplishments include qualifying for the 6A state championships all four years of high school and a runner-up finish in the 110 hurdles in 1995. Moreover, Moore was selected to the Who’s Who of Student Athletes and All Metro Team during all four years of his high school career.

Bill Quina - High Jump / Hurdles

Entering his 20th year with St. Paul’s, Legendary Coach Bill Quina is in charge of coaching the high jump, hurdles and the girls relay events. He has produced countless individual state champions in the sprinting and jumping events during his time at St. Paul’s. Quina's most notable athlete was Camille Root who won 39 individual state championships during her career at St. Paul's.

 

Coach Quina also serves as the Head Swim Coach for St. Paul’s. Under Quina’s direction the Swim team has produced two state team championships. Prior to coaching at St. Paul’s, Quina coached track for 11 years at Leflore High School and four years at Dunbar Middle School.

 

A Murphy High School graduate, Quina ran for the legendary Fred Carley. He went on to earn his degree from Spring Hill College. He holds a USATF level II certifications in the Combined Events, Instructor Training, Sprint / Hurdle events. Quina also attended the Elite Heptathlon Camp in San Diego, CA in 1995. Coach Quina is the father of two grown children and has been happily married to his wife, Jerrie, for 28 years.

Lyndell Farmer - Pole Vault

 

St. Paul's Track & Field program is very fortunate to have Lyndell Farmer as the pole vault coach. A USATF level I certified coach, Farmer is also a competitive vaulter, consistently ranking among the top ten master’s division (ages 55-60) pole vaulters in the world. As a Coach, Farmer has produced ten state champions in the Pole Vault, including the current 5A female AHSAA state record holder.

 

Coach Farmer is entering his fifth year coaching the vault at St. Paul’s. Prior to coming to St. Paul’s, Farmer coached the vault at Mobile Christian for four years. In addition to coaching, Farmer is the Corporate CEO of Document Technology.
